The award, given out annually by USA Track & Field (USATF), is awarded to the best athlete in track and field, and is named after a track and field Olympian in the Berlin 1936 Olympic Games who claimed four gold medals — a feat not accomplished again for nearly 50 years.
Holloway was given the 2024 award following a world record of 7.27 at the USATF Indoor Championships, an undefeated slate in the 60 hurdles, a World Athletics Indoor Championship gold and ultimately taking gold in the 110m men's hurdles with a time of 12.99.
