In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Woodridge Activities Fund.Those wishing to express online condolences may do so at www.guareandsons.com.Lydia Annette Brignoli Lewis passed away peacefully on November 10, 2024 at age 95 with her family at her side. She was born on June 24, 1929, the daughter of Enrico and Nerina (Bianchi) Brignoli. She lived her entire life in Montpelier on Barre Street and Sibley Avenue. She attended Montpelier schools and graduated from Montpelier High School in 1947.Lydia met her beloved husband, Carroll Lewis, while roller skating at the Paradise Rink. They were married on October 14, 1950 at St. Augustine’s Church in Montpelier, raised four children and celebrated 67 years of marriage before Carroll’s passing in May, 2018.She began her career working for the Vermont Mutual Insurance Company as the first keypunch operator where she received an award presented to her by Thomas Watson of IBM. She later worked for many years for the State of Vermont, Department of Motor Vehicles, from which she retired to begin her next chapter as a volunteer.Lydia took great joy in helping others and in giving back. After retiring, she spent many years volunteering in local nursing homes, first at Berlin Health and Rehabilitation and then at Woodridge Nursing Home. In 2011 she was honored as Volunteer of the Year by the Vermont Health Care Association for her volunteer work at Woodridge since 1996. In accepting her award, she said, “It is the greatest thrill for me to be in a place that I love so much. My father always said it was better to give than to receive, and I have given all that I can from my heart.”She was deeply religious and faithfully attended St. Augustine’s Catholic Church as long as she was able, where she was a member of the Catholic Daughters. Lydia was also very proud of her Italian heritage and one of the highlights of her life was a trip that she took with Carroll to Italy.Lydia enjoyed camping and boating with her family and her friends at the Central Vermont Boating Club. She also enjoyed attending Frost Heaves basketball games and Mountaineers baseball.Survivors include daughters Valerie Lewis and Stephanie (Michael) Quaranta, sons Stephen (Suzanne) Lewis, and Mark (Debbie) Lewis; grandchildren Kaitlin Quaranta, Megan (Scott) Miller, Monica (Alex) Comtois and Brittany Lewis (Thomas Guinn); great grandson Henry Lewis Comtois; goddaughters Janet DeLella and Sarah Kitchen many cousins; and her “family of the heart’’ the Murphys and Ariolis.She was pre-deceased by her husband Carroll and her grandson Richard Nicolino.Read the story on VTDigger here: Lydia Annette Brignoli Lewis.
