Memphis Housing Authority opens wait list for public housing
Nov 18, 2024
MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Memphis Housing Authority has officially opened several public housing, site-based waitlists for qualified applicants.
This will give low-income families, seniors and people with disabilities a chance to apply.
Those who are eligible may apply online from 8 a.m. on November 18 to November 20 at noon.
Tomecia Brown, MHA's Director of Compliance and Training told WREG that since the application opened Monday morning, hundreds of people have already applied.
"I just checked before we came in here and we already have about 480 that have applied so far," Brown said.
MHA says that applying does not guarantee a spot on the Public Housing waitlist, and it is not an offer of housing assistance.
Applicants will be placed on the list through random selection.
"Everyone that applies is accepted to the waiting list," MHA Chief Executive Officer Dexter Washington said. "Once that person's name gets to the top, it gets pulled (and) they go through the eligibility process. Then, that's when we determine if they can participate in the program and receive stubs."
Memphians are encouraged to apply. However, there are income limits.
"They'll go online and list their household members and it'll ask their income range for their household size," Brown said. "For very low-income (households), it's $42,600 a year. Extremely low is $31,200 and for low it's $68,150."
"And those limits are based on a percentage of the area's median income for a family of four living in the Memphis area," Washington said.
Information regarding site openings, age, and income requirements can be found on the Memphis Housing Authority website.
MHA says interested residents can submit applications for multiple sites, and those on the Housing Choice Voucher Program waitlist can also apply, although qualifications for both programs are different.
Disabled individuals who require assistance to apply for a Public Housing waitlist should call 901-544-1107 or email [email protected]. Those with hearing or speech disabilities using TDD or TTY technology may call Tennessee Relay Services at 7-1-1 for help.
