KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Two 18-year-olds from Kearney and one 29-year-old man were killed in a four-car crash involving a multi-state police chase Sunday morning, the Missouri State Highway Patrol confirmed.
According to MSHP, just before 7:25 a.m. Sunday, a Ford Focus and a Volvo VNL tractor-trailer were driving in the northbound lanes of northbound Interstate 29 when two cars, a Kia Sorento and Chevrolet Tahoe entered their lanes and began driving in the opposite direction of traffic.
MSHP later confirmed that the Tahoe was being driven by a Freemont County, Iowa deputy who had been chasing the driver of the Sorento -- a 29-year-old man with a 1-year-old passenger.

Shortly after entering the opposite lanes, the driver of the Sorento crashed into the Focus head-on. This caused the Sorento to drive off the roadway, hit a bridge and catch on fire.
The Ford Focus also ran off the roadway before it overturned and ejected one of its 18-year-old passengers.
As the crash took place, the tractor-trailer, which had been behind the Focus, attempted to swerve around the crash. However, it ended up hitting the Freemont County deputy in the process.
Both the tractor-trailer and the deputy then drove off the road and crashed into a median.
MSHP said three people were killed and one was seriously injured in the crash,

The fatalities include the 29-year-old driver of the Sorento, as well as two 18-year-olds, one boy and one girl, who had been riding in the Focus.
Another passenger in the Focus, a different 18-year-old girl, was seriously injured in the crash.
All three teens were 2024 graduates from Kearney High School.
Fremont County, Iowa Sheriff Kevin Aistrope reports they received a report Sunday morning of a woman at Grape Community Hospital, in Hamburg, Iowa, who had experienced a domestic assault.
The woman reported that she and her 1-year-old child had been kidnapped in Nebraska by a male acquaintance. He ran from Nebraska law enforcement into Iowa and dropped the female victim off at the hospital but left with the child.
Fremont County deputies were informed that the Iowa State Patrol was chasing the suspect vehicle. Deputies attempted to intercept the chase near Hamburg. The suspect was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of I-29 and speeding while troopers followed in the southbound lanes.
Missouri authorities were notified once the chase crossed into the state.
In the aftermath of the deadly crash, Kearney Mayor Randy Pogue, as well as the Kearney School District, made a post sending their condolences to the families of the victims.
"In times of sorrow, I offer my deepest sympathies to the Cunningham and Yeates families," Mayor Pogue said. "The loss of two Kearney Bulldogs in the traffic accident yesterday up North has shaken our community. May courage and hope be the steadfast companions of both families, friends, and all who mourn.
