INDEPENDENCE, Mo. -- A young man was shot and killed in the parking lot of an Independence restaurant. The deadly shooting happened at the Twin Peaks off of I-70 and Little Blue Parkway Saturday night.
Friends of 19-year-old Gabriel Garcia say he was the one shot and killed.
Independence School District Director of Public Relations Megan Murphy said Gabriel graduated from Van Horn High School in May of 2023.
Two Kearney 18-year-olds, one man killed in multi-state police chase
The Independence Police Department says a 19-year-old man was shot at about 11 p.m. Saturday. When its officers arrived on scene, they found a man lying in the parking lot suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to a hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
Police say they took a possible suspect into custody that night. On Monday though, they told FOX4 that person's no longer in custody.
Sunday morning, IPD said there was no danger to the public. Monday afternoon via email, IPD said the same thing. They would not do an on camera interview with FOX4.
Garcia spent his high school years playing for the school's soccer team. Monday afternoon, the woman who's set up the GoFundMe for the family, Marcy Gomez, let us into her home. She showed us the sign she's going to put up at an area business to ask people for donations.
In Spanish, the sign says Garcia was killed November 16 after he went out to eat with some friends at Twin Peaks.
Gomez is in charge of the family GoFundMe partly because Garcia's mom and dad live in the Mexican state of Tabasco. They're trying to get a Humanitarian Visa to come back to the U.S. to talk to the funeral home. Ultimately, Gomez says, the family wants Garcia buried in Mexico.
