ASHEBORO, N.C. (WGHP) -- A man died after being thrown from the bed of a truck that drove onto Asheboro airport property and overturned on Sunday, according to an Asheboro Police Department news release.
Officers with the APD responded to Tot Hill Farm Road when they were told about a truck overturned in a field.
Fire and EMS personnel arrived on the scene and began rendering aid before APD officers arrived. Once officers arrived, they learned a white 1996 Toyota T-100 truck had driven onto the property of the Asheboro Regional Airport via Tot Hill Farm Road.
The truck drove around the perimeter fence of the airport and into a large field southeast of the airport.
The truck was allegedly being driven by a 35-year-old man. Kyle David Dixon, 32, of Lexington, and a 46-year-old man were riding in the open bed area of the truck.
Police say the truck was being driven carelessly and recklessly when it rolled over.
Dixon and the other man were thrown from the bed of the truck.
The driver wasn't hurt. The other passenger was left with minor injuries and was treated and released at the scene.
Dixon was left with life-threatening injuries and airlifted to a hospital. He died later in the day, police say.
This incident is open, and the investigation is ongoing.
Investigators plan to consult with the District Attorney’s Office to determine appropriate charges.
