EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) -- The City of El Paso is taking the "interim" tag off of Tony Nevarez's title. Nevarez has served as the interim director for the El Paso International Airport since April. The City announced Monday, Nov. 18 that Nevarez will take over the position on a permanent basis. Nevarez has worked at the airport for more than 20 years. Before serving as interim director, he was the assistant director of aviation operations and security at the airport since 2017. The City said it was going to conduct a national search when it named Nevarez to the interim job. “We are thrilled to officially name Tony as the director of aviation,” City Manager Dionne Mack said. “His deep experience, passion for aviation, and unwavering commitment to excellence make him the ideal leader to guide the El Paso International Airport into its next chapter of success.” As airport director, Nevarez will oversee all aspects of the airport’s operations, ensuring it continues to serve as a "vital economic engine for the region and a welcoming gateway for travelers," the City said in its news release. Nevarez is also a licensed commercial/instrument pilot and FAA 107 commercial drone pilot. He holds a bachelor of science in professional aviation from Louisiana Tech University.
