Grubhub Starship robots making food delivery easier at USC

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WSPA) - We're always hearing about new ways technology is changing our lives.
In February 2024, students at the University of South Carolina saw firsthand -- every time they place an order.
At USC, there are 20 Grubhub Starship delivery robots.
Students can order food through the Grubhub app and can select the robot as their delivery mode.
USC's Dining Marketing Director Faren Alston said it’s more efficient than in-person delivery.
"Like most college campuses, parking and navigating actually within the like the locale of campus is very difficult," she said. "So I know just in general, a lot of those food share delivery services have just challenges. In general, getting onto campus, parking somewhere where they're allowed."
For an extra fee, students can have one of the 20 robots bring them food to almost anywhere on campus.
Junior Robot technician Gabriel Bowers said the robots were created to make student’s lives easier.
"People who actually can't leave their dorms easily, whether they are stuck working or have a physical disability, I've gotten the best feedback from them specifically," explained Bowers.
Alston said many students at USC order food on their phone and want it as fast as possible.
"Each and every day, over 70% of the orders that we have come in are coming in through their mobile phone. So again, we are a huge GrubHub campus," Bowers continued. "You know, in one in any given day, we'll have over 17,000 transactions through GrubHub. And so, you know, a portion of that, again, is attributed to the starship delivery robots."
First-year student Sammy Lyons said the robots are fast and safe.
"A lot of people use it in the later hours of the night for that safety aspect," Lyons said. "More people not wanting to make the trip in the dark hours of the night, and so they have the delivery and they can just go right outside their dorm."
The university is currently working on expanding robot delivery zones to make them accessible to everyone, no matter where they are on campus.
More than universities have Grubhub Starship robots on campus, including North Carolina A&T and Georgia Tech.
