ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) – Two people pleaded guilty Monday following an altercation at the Batavia Downs Casino that resulted in the death of Genesee County Sheriff's Seargeant Thomas Sanfratello. Around 12:45 a.m. on March 10, Genesee County Sheriff’s Sergeant Thomas Sanfratello, who was on assignment detail at the casino, was notified about an altercation inside Batavia Downs. After a verbal confrontation inside the bar, Sergeant Sanfratello and Batavia Downs security staff were said to have escorted Michael Elmore, 33, and Lyndsey Jean Wilcox, 39, out of the building. Two arrested after the death of Genesee County sergeant According to BPD, Wilcox became physically combative with the Sanfratello who, with the help of security, was able to place Wilcox under arrest. BPD said Elmore then tried to interfere with the arrest and became physically combative before attacking Sgt. Sanfratello. Security officers and Batavia Downs patrons attempted to assist Sgt. Sanfratello which led to a physical fight. Police said Sgt. Sanfratello attempted to use a taser on Elmore which did not appear to stop him. Heubusch said sometime during the physical altercation, Sanfratello became unresponsive, and CPR was started immediately. Sanfratello was pronounced deceased by the Genesee County Coroner. Sanfratello served 32-years with the Genesee County Sheriff's Department. Funeral for Sgt. Thomas Sanfratello held at GCC Elmore and Wilcox appeared in Genesee County Court on Monday, and accepted plea deals for the incident on March 10. Elmore plead guilty to Aggravated Manslaughter (1st). He will face a sentence between 10 and 20 years in the State Department of Corrections with an additional five years of post-release supervision. Elmore will be sentenced on Dec. 17 at 9:30 a.m. Wilcox plead guilty to Assault (2nd). According to the Genesee County District Attorney, the plea was conditioned on a split sentence of no more than six months in jail with an additional five years of probation. Wilcox is scheduled to be sentenced on Jan. 21, 2025, at 10 a.m.
