RICHMOND, Va. (DC News Now) -- The days of using hand-held calculators aren't entirely gone, but when it comes to testing in Virginia, they're not as prevalent as they once were. The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) said beginning with the 2022-2023 academic year, students only would use the Desmos Virginia Calculator within TestNav during an online growth assessment or SOL test.  Desmos offers a variety of math tools online. Many are calculators, including "a four-function, scientific, and graphing calculator." The calculators are free to the public and can be accessed with a computer, tablet, or other personal device. Fredericksburg mother voice fears about potential Medicaid cuts VDOE said hand-held calculators (more old-school approach) only would be used by students who complete a paper test or by students with disabilities who have an IEP or 504 accommodation that requires the use of a hand-held calculator.
