Border X Brewing facing closure after more than a decade

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A brewery that has been a staple of Barrio Logan for more than a decade is fighting to stay open as it faces closure before the end of the year.
Border X Brewing, an institution of Logan Avenue, has fallen on hard times since the COVID-19, like many other local joints. Closures during the pandemic racked up the brewery's debt that the "sporadic" recovery has not been able to close, owner David Favela said on Instagram last week.
Now, as the Border X's lease is due to expire, this debt might make them unable to stay open in its current location.
"If we cannot come to an agreement with the landlord, we may need to transition Border X Brewing to another location, ideally in Barrio Logan where we can continue to partner with our community," Favela wrote in the post.

The James Beard-nominated watering hole has also turned to the community to help them keep their doors open, launching a fundraiser through GoFundMe to preserve — and hopefully further — their mission in the historically Chicano and Latino neighborhood.
"Our brewery was one of the originals to open in Barrio Logan and helped support the incredible growth of dozens of small artists, businesses and restaurants on Logan Ave, many of which are women owned micro-prenuers," Favela said. "We are a case study of what a community can achieve by working together!"
Those who cannot donate are encouraged just to stop by for a drink or a taco before the end of the year.
"Join us in keeping a place that’s more than just a brewery—a true community hub that embraces diversity and inclusion, where every pint is a toast to our roots and future," he continued.
Border X Brewing is one of a handful of mainstay businesses in Barrio Logan whose future remains uncertain. Chief among them is the century-old Las Cuatro Milpas, which is facing a potential property auction because of $50,000 delinquent taxes.
"We believe in our barrio," Favela added. "Our vision is unwavering: we created a beautiful space and invited the Barrio to fill it with art, music and culture, and they did."
