Recently identified fallen World War II soldier to be interred in Providence

FORT KNOX, Ky (WLNE) — The remains of a U.S. soldier who was killed in action in Germany during World War II will be interred at the North Burial Ground in Providence on November 23.
U.S. Army Sgt. Jack Zarifian, a Bridgeport, Conn. native, was a member of Company G, 2nd Battalion, 253rd Infantry Division, 63rd Infantry Division when he was killed in action on April 6, 1945 at the age of 19.
Zarifian was struck buy a Nebelwerfer rocket while his unit fought enemy soldiers near the German town of Buchhof.
Zarifian was accounted for by the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) on May 10, 2024 after his remains were discovered at a Buchhof construction site in October of 2023.
His remains were transferred to a DPAA laboratory for DNA analysis and identification, as well as historical and forensic reporting.
Family members are located in this process with help from The Past Conflict Repatriations Branch of the U.S. Army, and DNA samples or family references are requested by this organization.
