ATT offers $5,000 reward for tips on copper thefts
Nov 18, 2024
INDIANAPOLIS — AT&T is offering up to $5,000 for information that leads to the arrest of copper thieves who've damaged telecommunication infrastructure and caused power outages in Marion, Brown and Shelby counties.
“Copper theft often damages our critical communications infrastructure, which can cause network outages that leave our customers without the ability to connect,” said Bill Soards, president of AT&T Indiana. “Maintaining high-quality service is a top priority, and we’re working closely with law enforcement to investigate any incidents.”
Last week, numerous power outages were reported on the southwest side of Indianapolis that were tied to the theft and vandalism of copper and fiber cables. Some customers reported being without internet for nearly two days because of the cables being stolen by thieves.
Meanwhile in Brown County, the sheriff's department has investigated 12 AT&T related thefts since June.
“It’s disappointing,” said Officer Tommy Thompson of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department. “We see individuals continue to go after metals, precious metals, to try and scrap for money. We don’t typically see it on this scale.”
AT&T is working with IMPD — in addition to the Shelby County Sheriff's Department and the Brown County Sheriff's Department — to bring the thieves responsible for this rash of thefts to justice.
The public is asked to report any unmarked, non-AT&T vehicles or individuals seen cutting or removing cables. Detailed and specific information that leads to an arrest can earn a tipster a monetary reward of up to $5,000.
The reward is valid for leads received by May 18.
Those with information or tips are asked to call law enforcement along with AT&T Global Security & Investigations at (800) 807‐4205.
