DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) – A teen was sent to the hospital after an officer shot him during a brief chase with police in Durham early Sunday morning, police and family members said.
According to the Durham Police Department, officers responded just after midnight to the 4700 block of Hope Valley Road, near N.C. 54 in south Durham.
Early Sunday evening, the victim's dad and uncle confirmed to CBS 17 that a 16-year-old boy was wounded by police.
Police said 911 calls about the scene referenced “car club” racing near the Food Lion.

“When a Durham officer arrived on scene to disburse the cars and crowd, objects were thrown at the officer and his vehicle,” according to a news release from the Durham Police Department.
The officer then got out of the car to confront the suspect, which resulted in a brief foot chase. During the chase, the suspect pulled out a gun and refused to drop the weapon after repeated calls by the officer to do so, police said.
“The suspect raised the handgun and was shot by the officer,” the news release stated.
According to police, the suspect continued to run away and got into a vehicle with several other people inside. A vehicle description was given over the radio and another officer pulled the car over and gave medical aid to the suspect until EMS crews arrived, Durham police said.

The suspect was transported to a nearby hospital and is currently in stable condition, police said. No Durham police officers were injured in the incident.
On Sunday, police were still in the parking lot near the Food Lion and circular skid marks were visible throughout the parking lot in front of the store.
The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative duty, which is standard procedure in an officer-involved shooting.
Durham police said the incident is being investigated by the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation and the Durham Police Professional Standards Division, which is also standard procedure.
“This remains an active investigation at this time,” the news release stated.
Police said no further information is expected to be released until Monday morning.
