(PUEBLO, Colo.) — The Leadville, Salida, San Carlos, South Park, South Platte, and Pikes Peak ranger districts are now offering Christmas tree permits for the upcoming holiday season. Permits are now available through Recreation.gov. Individuals can purchase a permit online, with an additional $2.50 processing fee for all online purchases. There are specific areas and dates for designated cutting areas, all depending on the district. Leadville, Salida, and San Carlos ranger districts: $10 per tree permit with a limit of two per family. Tree permits are available online and at the district office. South Park Ranger District: $20 per tree permit with a limit of five permits per family. Permits are available online and at the district office. South Platte Ranger District: $20 per permit with a limit of five permits per family. Permits are only available online. Pikes Peak Ranger District: $20 per permit with a limit of five per family. Tree permit sales begin online on Friday, Nov. 29, and will be available for purchase at the district office starting Monday, Dec. 2. In addition, all fourth graders are eligible for a free Christmas tree as part of the national Every Kid Outdoors initiative. The pass can be acquired online, however this pass does not waive the $2.50 purchase processing fee. When cutting a Christmas tree, make sure to be in a National Forest and the correct ranger district. Individuals should bring a printed copy of the permit of a Christmas tree tag along with a paper map as cell service may be unavailable. Handsaws and axes are the only tools allowed, chainsaws are prohibited. Individuals who venture out to get a tree should dress in warm layers, bring a rope to secure the tree to the vehicle, and enjoy the tradition.
