(COLORADO SPRINGS) -- Tuesday, Nov. 19 will mark two years since the Club Q shooting, where five people lost their lives and nineteen others were injured when a 22-year-old man opened fire inside the LGBTQ+night club. Nearly two years after the shooting on Sunday, Nov. 17, a makeshift memorial stood outside Club Q where hundreds of people gathered to remember those who lost their lives two years ago. Many community members lit candles and left flowers at the memorial where five people were killed on November 19, 2022, with some attendees wearing all white to symbolize mourning, purity, or rebirth. "We know they would be happy with what we've done and how far we've come with everything," said Ashton Gamblim, a survivor of the shooting. As they continue to heal two years after the Club Q shooting, community members honor the lives that were lost as they continue to heal. "This isn't just about them, it's fighting for this community, and that's exactly what they would have wanted is for us to never stop fighting," added Gamblin. Emotions were high on Sunday outside of the LGBTQ+ Club for a somber yet resilient remembrance of the shooting hosted by the Prism Community Collective. Gamblin says she spent last year's anniversary at a bar with friends. "I think that kind of spoke volumes for a lot of us because we were in a bar when we absolutely never wanted to be in a bar at that hour again, and on Tuesday, I can't promise I'm going to be in a bar, but I can promise I will be with some very close people from this," she said. Nearly two years later, survivors say it never gets easier. "I shed a few tears, and I was well taken care of by our bartender that night, but it kind of pushed me back to being in that same headspace of where I was," added Gamblin. The atmosphere was heavy as survivors grieved and shared memories of family and friends. Many people expressed disbelief it has been two years since the tragic day. "Well, I'm pretty sad that I'm not very grateful to be here and to be able to talk about it and keep people in remembrance of my friends Daniel and Derrick. Kelly Loving fell with me at the bar that night, so I have a closeness to her," said Edward Sanders, a survivor of the shooting. The night of the shooting Sanders was at the club wearing a red suit. "I'm proud of the suit. It's a badge of honor. My wounds are a badge of honor," he said. He is remembering the day by wearing the same red suit he wore that night. "That night, basically, I bought the jacket for that event, and it's the only thing I remember from the ambulance ride was them apologizing for cutting it off of me and ruining my suit. But it was ruined anyway, so its okay, but my friend replaced it while I was still in the hospital, so that's why I'm wearing it today to remember and honor my friends," said Sanders. The owner of Club Q, Mathew Haynes told FOX21 NEWS the club will reopen at its original location sometime shortly. Back in March, survivors of the shooting opened "The Q," a lounge inside the Satellite Hotel. The space is aimed to continue Club Q's mission of serving as a safe and affirming place for all. Since the shooting, the owner has planned to contact a permanent standing memorial outside the original location to honor the five victims killed and those injured. Haynes says he plans to redesign and reopen the club at its original location. "There are certain people that were involved in the shooting that cannot step foot in here again, but then there are so many that keep telling us to reopen. The family members of our two bartenders truly want us to reopen because they know this is where they were the happiest," said Haynes. Club Q will hold a public candlelight vigil at the site of the attack on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Meanwhile, Prism Community Collective is offering extended hours from 12-9 p.m. on Nov. 19 and 20. Individuals can drop in during that time to connect with others and find onsite support.
