South Carolina officials launch new phone app to help with recycling
Nov 18, 2024
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WSAV) — South Carolina officials introduced a new phone app on Friday that they said will make recycling easier for residents.
The Recycle Here SC app was created to help residents know what, where and how to recycle different items at different locations across South Carolina, the S.C. Department of Environmental Services (SCDES) said.
Officials said that confusion on what items should be recycled and contamination issues are the biggest challenges of recycling programs.
The Recycle Here SC app shows you what recyclable items are accepted at locations near you, filters based on what you need to recycle and notifies you of special collection events. You can also use the app to learn more about recycling, composting, litter prevention and waste reduction programs, plus information about how to properly dispose of other waste.

"With the launch of the Recycle Here SC app, we're equipping South Carolinians with a powerful tool to make recycling more accessible and efficient," Lt. Governor Pamela S. Evette said. "Since much of the litter in our communities consists of items that could have been recycled, this initiative will also play a key role in reducing litter across our state.”
The app was developed through a partnership between the SCDES, PalmettoPride and the S.C. Beverage Association, officials said.

Anyone without the ability to use a mobile phone app can continue to refer to SCDES’s Where to Recycle webpage for a list of county and city recycling locations throughout the state, available at des.sc.gov/recycleheresc.
