FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - Fort Wayne's Community Harvest Food Bank serves numerous counties making sure families are fed. The food bank is brewing up new ways to raise awareness of hunger in our communities. It's what makes the food bank's Grains of Hope program Positively Fort Wayne. Inside E Brewing in rural Whitley County is a line of taps ready for the next pour. One beer specifically is a glass of support through Community Harvest Food Bank's Grains of Hope. "The idea right now is that we reach out to individual breweries. We work together to create a fun beer that we make together. And then the proceeds go to Community Harvest," said Logan Haffner, Impact Manager at Community Harvest. Sights, sounds of Founder’s Day of Caring 2024 Grains of Hope has been around for a little over a year. Already it has raised enough funds to provide 5,000 meals around northeast Indiana. And while monetary donations are always welcomed, Grains of Hope provides another benefit. "Right now with the way hunger looks and the way that situation is evolving within our entire community, the conversation is the most important piece of it," explained Haffner. E Brewing jumped at the chance to be part of the conversation with its "Pinkies Out, Carmen," a lavender and blackberry saison, named after Community Harvest's executive director Carmen Cumberland. "It supports all 11 counties here in northeast Indiana. It was a no-brainer. We absolutely had to do it," shared Jennifer Esterline, co-owner of E Brewing. "We want people to know the story. And so it started from the idea. When we pour the beer, we're literally explaining it to them: How they got the name. That's one of the big ones. They want to know, why is it named after Carmen. You know, what's the history of it? And with it being an actual farmhouse saison, it was perfect." Perfect because E Brewing is on a farm. The brewery also has an Air BnB which helps further the conversation of hunger even beyond northeast Indiana. "Pinkies Out, Carmen" also supports other local farms, getting the blueberries and lavender close by. "Everything we do we try to do as local as possible. And what other way could you do it with Community Harvest than keep it local? … We're into really giving back to the community. We do a lot of things weekly that we donate a lot of money to. Every other Friday we do BINGO for charities. There's been a lot of dog rescues that have been able to benefit from us and things like that," said Jay Esterline, brewer and co-owner of E Brewing. It's no secret many are struggling right now, especially as we head toward the holiday season. That's why word of mouth for Community Harvest is absolutely priceless. "The fact is financial resources and food resources are going down while the need is going up. So, resources alone are not going to be sufficient. What we need to do is raise awareness and raise awareness with other partners whether they're nonprofits, retail, or service providers, to all jump and figure out what can we all do together than what we can do by ourselves," said Haffner. Neighbors growing together is Positively Fort Wayne It also doesn't hurt that the local beer scene is always supporting each other, too. "This is a tough time for a lot of restaurants and wineries and breweries, and we all have to support each other. We love our breweries in Fort Wayne as much as we do in Warsaw, or up in Elkhart, or wherever. We are a brew family, so when we can support each other, and especially when we can bring in Community Harvest from Fort Wayne, absolutely," said Jennifer. Unfortunately, E Brewing has run out of "Pinkies Out, Carmen." Jay shared it's possible the brewery will make the beer again. You can click here to learn more about E Brewing.
