ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (WROC) — The game could not have started much better for the Bills. On the second snap, Patrick Mahomes tried to scramble out of the pocket. Ed Oliver corralled him near the line of scrimmage as Mahomes tried to throw. The ball sailed high and was intercepted by Taylor Rapp. Buffalo got into 3rd and 7 immediately after the interception, but Josh Allen found Amari Cooper for a one-handed 30 yard gain that got Buffalo the Chiefs 31 yard line. After a Khalil Shakir catch and run got Buffalo another first down, the Bills were again in third and long. This time, Allen threw short to Curtis Samuel who made a man miss and gained 15 yards to the Kansas City three yard line. James Cook scored on the next play to put Buffalo in front. Tyler Bass missed the extra point right to hold the lead at 6-0. Buffalo's defense struck again on the next possession. A.J. Epenesa tipped a swing pass on first down. On third down, the Bills blanketed every KC receiver and Mahomes couldn't scramble free. Terrel Bernard finished the play with a sack and the Chiefs had to punt. The Bills got a first down on third and long with a nice throw on the run from Allen to Shakir for 15 yards, but the drive stalled after that. Sean McDermott left his offense on the field for 4th and 8 from the KC 42 yard line, but took a delay of game after not drawing an offside penalty. The Sam Miller punt left the Chiefs at their own 12. Kansas City answered with an 85 yard TD drive where rookie Xavier Worthy was the star. The Chiefs got their first first down of the game on a Kareem Hunt run on 3rd and 1. Mahomes found Worthy for 31 yards on the next snap. The Chiefs converted the next third down with a short throw to a reserve tackle lined up as eligible. After that, Worthy caught a quick throw for 14 yards on third and four. He scored on the next snap from ten yards out. Kansas City hit the PAT and took a 7-6 lead. Buffalo went 70 yards for a score on their next possession. A defensive holding drawn by Mack Hollins got the Bills moving on a third and long. Allen found Dawson Knox for 24 yards and then hit Cooper for another 25 to move Buffalo inside the KC ten yard line. Cook scored from six yards out on the next play and the Bills were back in front 13-7. Mahomes started the next drive with a long throw to Worthy that would have gone for 40 yards, but Worthy could not get two feet down in bounds. Two plays later, Von Miller had a sack. Brandon Codrington then returned the punt 25 yards to the Chiefs 41 yard line. KC immediately forced Buffalo into a 4th and 2 and the Bills went for it. However, an Allen throw to Knox was intercepted by Chamarri Conner and returned to the Buffalo 40 yard line. The Chiefs relied on backup tight ends to find the end zone. Noah Gray took a center screen 14 yards to the Bills 24. Peyton Hendershot caught a 12 yard throw that moved the ball inside the five. Mahomes went back to Gray on third and goal for a two yard touchdown and a 14-13 lead. Buffalo got a field goal before the half thanks to 19 yards rushing from Ty Johnson, a 21 yard throw to Samuel and a 14 yard throw to Hollins. Bass hit a 34 yard field goal and Buffalo walked to the locker room with a 16-14 lead. The second half began with four consecutive punts. Buffalo finally got moving thanks to a 22 yard pass interference penalty on third and 9. Shakir broke free for 22 yards after a short throw to move the ball inside the Kansas City 30. Samuel finished the drive on a 12 yard touchdown catch where Allen was able to escape a Kansas City blitz just long enough to get a throw off. The Bills had the first two-score lead of the game at 23-14. Mahomes walked the Chiefs right back down the field in 10 plays. Hunt, Deandre Hopkins and Justin Watson had consecutive touches of ten or more to move the Chiefs into the red zone. A pass interference on Christian Benford put the ball at the one yard line Gray caught his second TD pass to rankle Travis Kelce fantasy owners and close the margin back down to two at 23-21. The Bills responded with a 12-play drive taking up just under six minutes. Allen found Hollins out left for 15 yards to start the drive, followed by a nine-yard pick up from Allen on the ground. Getting the Bills to Kansas City's 26-yard line, Allen capped off the drive with a rushing touchdown, his fifth of the year, to bring the score to 30-21 after Bass' extra point was good. The Chiefs had 2:17 left to work with as they trailed by nine. On 4th and 13 from their own 38, a pass from Mahomes intended for Kelce was picked off by Bernard on a diving catch to seal the victory, handing Kansas City its first loss of the season. The Bills head into a bye week and will play next on Sunday, December 1st where they will host the 49ers.
