ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The Lobo men's basketball team has lost for the first time the season. New Mexico fell 71-85 in Madison Square Garden to Rick Pitino and St. John's.
The Lobos struggled to get going against a big Red Storm team. UNM was out-rebounded 32-49 and outscored in the paint 38-48.
"I thought their size, their strength, their physicality certainly broke open the game," said UNM head coach Richard Pitno. "At times we were able to get some stops, but just could not get rebounds. They're bigger than a lot of teams and they're really, really good. Really proud of the fight our guys had. Just couldn't get over the hum."
Individually, Mustapha Amzil and Nelly Jr Joseph led the way with 16 points each. CJ Nolan had his best game as a Lobo with 15 points. Full stats.
UNM now returns to the Pit and will host Grambling State on Thursday. That game will tipoff at 7 p.m.
