PHILADELPHIA — The Princeton men’s soccer team is headed to the NCAA Tournament. Nico Nee, Ian Nunez and Daniel Ittycheria all scored and the third-seeded Tigers won the Ivy League Tournament championship for the first time with a 3-1 victory over top-seeded Penn on Sunday afternoon at Rhodes Field. Princeton (12-6) capped off a weekend in which it rallied from a two-goal deficit in the semifinal against Cornell to win in overtime, 3-2, and then took out the No. 12-ranked Quakers (14-3-1) in decider. While Penn is getting an at-large berth into the NCAA Tournament, the Tigers had to win Sunday’s final to earn a 12th trip to the big stage. Nee staked them to a ninth-minute lead when he pounced on a rebound that was spilled inside the six-yard box and Nunez doubled the advantage in the 62nd minute after another defensive mistake by Penn trying to play out of the back. Ittycheria struck for his team-leading ninth of the season in the 76th minute to wrap up the latest tourney trip for Mercer County Hall of Famer Jim Barlow. Leo Burney scored for the Quakers in the 84th minute. Iona 1, Rider 0 NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. — Bautista Rossi scored five minutes into overtime and the 10-men of the Gaels (11-4-3) broke Bronc hearts and denied them back to back trips to the NCAA Tournament. Rider (14-5-1) was making its seventh MAAC Tournament final appearance in the last nine years if you don’t count the truncated 2020-21 spring season and trying to win the conference championship for the seventh time. The Broncs caught a break at the end of regulation after Iona’s Jad Benjelloun was shown a second yellow card for excessive celebration of a disallowed goal. But it hardly looked like Rider was playing with a man advantage in overtime as it barely crossed the midfield line and the Gaels put away a deserved winner after dominating the second half. What looked a hopeful ball over the top hit a retreating Cole Sotak in the back of the head, and with goalkeeper Adam Salama stranded, the ball hit off the post and right to Rossi. Rider only made it to overtime after Salama made an incredible kick save and Theo Da Silva contorted his neck for a goal line clearance in the second half.  Benjelloun thought he had the winner with 2:30 left in regulation but the offside flag wiped out the goal and the referee produced a second yellow card because the midfielder took his shirt off in celebration. The Broncs also suffered an injury blow when center back Max Schrader was forced off with an injury in the 75th minute. Women’s Soccer Johns Hopkins 5, TCNJ 0 EWING — Katie Sullivan and Carrie McIntire combined for all five goals and the Blue Jays (17-2-3) handed the Lions (18-1-2) not only their first loss, but knocked them out of the NCAA Division III Tournament in the second round. Sullivan had a hat trick to give her 18 goals on the season, while McIntire notched the opening two tallies to put Hopkins in control at halftime. Field Hockey St. Joseph’s 1, Princeton 0 PHILADELPHIA — Celeste Smits knocked in a pass from Julia Duffhuis in the fourth quarter and the Hawks (19-3) edged the Tigers (14-6) to advance to the Final Four. Women’s Basketball Williams 55, TCNJ 49 WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Nina Branchizo scored 14 points for the Lions (2-1) but it wasn’t enough to prevent them from falling to Williams (2-0) in the championship game of the Morin Memorial Tournament.
