Princeton men’s basketball bounces back with win over Merrimack
Nov 17, 2024
Mitch Henderson wanted to see how his team would bounce back from a Friday night loss to Loyola Chicago in which he thought Princeton got out-worked late in the game.
He got his answer in the best way possible.
Caden Pierce had 18 points and nine rebounds, Dalen Davis added 16 points and the Tigers roared past Merrimack with a strong second half to win, 68-57, on Sunday afternoon at Lawler Arena in North Andover, Mass.
This was a tricky road trip on short rest against an opponent with a quirky matchup zone defense. The zone worked in knocking Princeton out of sync for the first 13 minutes. The Tigers had seven turnovers by that point — they only average 9.5 per game — and the Warriors led by 14.
But Princeton (4-1) figured it out by getting the ball to the high post and moving it quickly. It closed the first half on an 18-6 push to get within two and then surged in front on a 10-2 run out of the locker room.
Xaivian Lee added 10 points and Philip Byriel provided a spark off the bench with six points and seven rebounds in 17 minutes. Byriel made two of his three attempts from beyond the arc.
The Tigers out-rebounded the Warriors, 37-23, a good sign for a team that had one of the worst rebounding per game differentials in the country. They were also 10-of-22 on 3-pointers.
Adam Clark led Merrimack (1-2) with 24 points.
The Warriors are in their first season in the MAAC after moving over from the NEC. Princeton is 2-0 against the MAAC, having defeated Iona by a point in the opener.
The Tigers stay on the road next week for three games in Myrtle Beach Classic, which begins on Nov. 21 against Wright State.
