(BCN) -- Some Martinez residents have been contacted by people claiming to represent law enforcement, even faking a phone number to make it appear genuine, police said. Scammers can imitate local phone numbers and often use threats of arrest or legal action to intimidate victims into divulging personal information or making payments, police said in a press release Saturday. "Remember, Martinez police will never ask for money to clear up legal matters/warrants," police said. Police recommend several steps to keep personal information safe: -- Stay vigilant: If someone contacts you unexpectedly, especially with threats of legal action, fines, or urgent demands, be cautious. -- Verify contact information: Always double-check phone numbers or email addresses before responding. Official organizations never ask for sensitive details by text or email. --Don't share personal information: Never give out personal, financial, or login information over the phone, by email, or on social media -- especially to strangers. -- Report suspicious activity: If you're contacted by a potential scammer, report it to relevant authorities such as banks and credit card companies. Anyone who feels they are the victim of this crime is encouraged to contact the Martinez Police Department at (925) 372-3440. Copyright © 2024 Bay City News, Inc.
