Rising costs add stress to holiday shopping and dinners
Nov 17, 2024
CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - Thanksgiving is right around the corner, but the holiday season can bring unwanted stress with it.
Holidays are supposed to be a joyous time, but with family get-togethers, decorating, and shopping to manage, they often bring financial stress with them.
According to CNBC and a survey by Bankrate, a recent rise in the cost of everyday items has many holiday shoppers rethinking their spending strategies.
Two out of 5 survey respondents said inflation will change the way they shop this year. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics also showed the food at home index, how much you'll pay for groceries has increased 13.5% over the past year.
This means holiday dinners may be more expensive than last year. So, to navigate this stress, experts say:
Set a budget and stick to it.
Prioritize who gets individual gifts, and organize a game like a white elephant for larger family get-togethers.
Also consider homemade gifts and gift cards, which can help you stick to spending an exact amount.
When it comes to holiday food, divide responsibilities so whoever is hosting doesn't have to provide the whole meal, and communicate your feelings with your family if your stress is affecting your ability to celebrate together.
And while stress may stem from finances, these feelings can spill over into other aspects of your life. Take some time for yourself as you plan for the holidays, and seek professional help if you feel you need it.
