ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – For the first time since 2003, the New Mexico Lobos football team has a victory against a ranked opponent.
The Lobos outscored 18/19-Washington State 24-7 in the second half on their way to a 38-35 victory at University Stadium Saturday night. The victory came on senior night and was one the Lobos had to have to keep their bowl hopes alive. The victory improved New Mexico's record to 5-6, one win away from reaching bowl eligibility.
After going into halftime with a 28-14 deficit, the Lobos defense only allowed one touchdown which temporarily gave the Cougars a 35-31 lead deep into the fourth quarter. The Lobos answered with an 11-play 75-yard drive which ended with a one-yard touchdown run from quarterback Devon Dampier. Dampier led the Lobos in rushing with 193 yards and has broken the UNM total offense record formally held by Stoney Case. The total offense for Dampier this season is 3,658 in a single season. Dampier had 3 rushing touchdowns and 174 yards through the air with one touchdown pass in the victory.
UNM running back Eli Sanders rushed for 108 yards on 13 carries. Sanders tied the game at 28 in the third quarter on a 26-yard touchdown run. Cougars quarterback John Mateer threw for 375 yards and 4 touchdowns in the loss. The Cougars hoped to keep winning to make the college football playoff.
The Cougars are now 8-2 on the season. New Mexico is headed into a bye week. A win at Hawaii in the regular season finale will send first-year coach Bronco Mendenhall and his team into a bowl opportunity for the first time since 2016.
