Two Park City Rotary Club members recently boosted Park City High School’s food pantry. Steve Yapp and his wife, Margie, delivered a pickup truck brimming with essential food items and toiletries.Steve and Margie have been members of the Park City Rotary Club for five years. The club is part of a global network with 1.4 million members dedicated to community service. The local club was founded in 1980. Known as the “Noon” Rotary, the Park City club has about 100 members who gather weekly to foster friendships, network and discuss projects. The Miners’ Day celebration and the Running of the Balls on Main Street are among their annual events, which fund various community-oriented programs, including grants and scholarships.“The [club] is considered the premier service group, and through my business, we support a hundred nonprofits every year. We are always looking for opportunities to give back,” Steve said. “When we heard the announcement that the pantry was running out, we knew it was the right thing to do. We went to Costco and filled the truck up.”Christina Miller, the club’s youth director and liaison with Park City High School, advises the Interact Club at the high school. Interact is youth version of Rotary, encouraging young people to engage in community service while fostering a connection with the adult Rotary Club.“The Interact Club completes two to five service projects each month during the school year,” Miller said. “Many years ago our Interact board members brought the pantry to the attention of the Rotary. Park City does have food and shelter insecurites with lots of kids where they don’t have food over a weekend or holiday break. Or they don’t have access to supplies, basic things like toothpaste and deoderant. The hope is the pantry is a place where kids can go on the honor system, they take what they need. No questions asked.”The Park City High School food pantry is a resource for students and families facing food insecurity. The Yapps’ donation will help ensure that pantry shelves remain stocked. Steve said there are silent leaders throughout the community, and that the Rotary Club helps serve the community’s needs.“Normalcy was the hoped impact. You don’t want any child in need to be embarrassed,” Steve said. “I want these kids to know that are people who are aware that there are needs, and that care that they get addressed. The bottom line is, it’s the right thing to do.”“Park City does have food and shelter insecurites with lots of kids where they don’t have food over a weekend or holiday break,” says Christina Miller (left), the club’s youth director and liaison to Park City High School and its Interact Club.
