MT. PLEASANT, S.C. (WPRI) -- Rhode Island FC beat Charleston Battery 2-1 on Saturday night, winning the USL Championship Eastern Conference title. RIFC got on the board first right before halftime when defender Karifa Yao found the back of the net in the 42nd minute after a deep throw-in from midfielder Clay Holstad. Then, a few minutes into the second half, Holstad found forward Noah Fuson and drilled a left-footer over the outstretched hands of Charleston Battery goalkeeper Adam Grinwis at the 52nd minute, giving RIFC the 2-0 lead. In the 61st minute, Charleston got on the board when midfielder David Torres launched a powerful shot from distance that hit the bottom of the crossbar and into the net. That would be the only goal that keeper Koke Vegas would allow, as RIFC won the game 2-1. The club is the first expansion team in eight years to advance to the USL Championship Final in its inaugural season. RIFC will play for the USL Championship against Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC, in Colorado, next Saturday, Nov. 23 at 12 p.m. Eastern on CBS. Close Thanks for signing up!
