KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Missouri State Highway Patrol's (MSHP) Division of Drug and Crime Control, as well as the Kansas City Police Department (KCPD), is investigating a trooper-involved shooting early Sunday morning.
According to MSHP, just before 12:30 a.m. Sunday, a trooper tried to pull a car over for speeding northbound on Interstate 35 (I-35) in Clay County, Missouri. However, the driver accelerated and exited the highway instead of yielding.

The report said the driver got back on the highway heading southbound into Jackson County. During the chase, a Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) helicopter monitoring the pursuit through a communications channel chose to arrive at the scene and follow overhead. This allowed MSHP troopers on the ground to stop the chase and listen to updates from KHP.
Eventually, both pursuits were discontinued and the KHP helicopter returned across the state line to assist in another call.
MSHP troopers drove to the car's last known location and found it at about 12:40 a.m. It was parked at Linwood Boulevard and Van Brunt Avenue, and the driver was still inside.
According to MSHP's report, troopers tried to prevent the driver from fleeing again by placing a patrol car in the front and the rear of the car. As the troopers got out of their cars, though, the driver reversed and hit one of the patrol cars and then accelerated forward and hit the other.
One of the troopers standing outside their car fired a gun at the suspect as it continued to try and flee. However, MSHP said the driver ended up getting around the barricade and headed westbound on Interstate 70.
While fleeing, the driver exited onto Prospect Avenue and came to a stop near 13th Street before becoming "disabled."
The driver then fled on foot but was taken into custody.

Two passengers were found in the car, however, one was suffering from gunshot wounds.

MSHP said the case is being investigated by the Patrol's Division of Drug and Crime Control and members of KCPD. KCPD's Crime Scene Investigation Unit is also helping collect evidence.
