Football Frenzy: Brighton, Eastridge, East Rochester/Gananda, Avon win titles
Nov 16, 2024
Class A Championship: (1) Brighton 28, (3) Canandaigua 7
The Brighton Bruins are Section V football champions. Finally.
The Bruins remained undefeated, taking down Canandaigua 28-7 to earn the first sectional title in the long history of Brighton football. The Bruins had made it to the title game three times before, losing each game. Two of those matchups came this decade, including a loss to East/WOIS in last year's title game.
"The amount of players that we've had play for us and our staff and all the years of not winning it, " said Brighton head coach Steve Lian. "Getting so close three times before this one and to be able to pull it off, it's not just for these kids. It's for everybody who has ever put on a uniform. This is a really special one."
At the beginning of the game, it looked like the storyline would be a return to glory for Canandaigua, who won four straight titles from 2019-2023.
The Gray Wolves marched right down the field and quarterback Drew Williamee corkscrewed his way into the end zone for a 7-0 lead.
Late in the second quarter, Canandaigua had another chance to score, but the Brighton defense came up strong. Matthew Heininger hit Williamee as he was about to throw, leading to an interception by Queyanu McDermott. That kept the score 7-0 at the break.
The Bruins opened the second half with authority, scoring on a 26-yard touchdown run by Gavin Parks.
Canandaigua looked ready to re-take the lead and got in a goal-to-go situation, but the Brighton defense got the stop they needed to keep the game tied at 7.
Both teams would trade punts on their next drives when Noah Wagner gave Brighton another spark. The Brighton punt returner e took the ball at his own 11-yard line and returned it 57 yards to set up the Bruins just outside the red zone. At the start of the fourth quarter, Heininger took a direct snap into the end zone for a 14-7 lead.
With just over five minutes to go in the game, Brighton had the ball back and was looking for first downs to ice the game. On third down, Parks took a handoff and got a block from Wesley Sturrup to take it up the sidelines 87 yards for a touchdown. That gave Brighton a 21-7 lead.
After stopping Canandaigua one more time, Grady Hopkin sealed the game with a keeper for a 28-yard touchdown.
"It's just a blessing," said junior linebacker Matthew Heininger, who was named the game's defensive MVP. "Just to be able to come out here and play as hard as I can and just extend the season one more week with the people that I've grown up with and played football with my whole life. It's really just a blessing."
Heininger finished with 11 tackles, a sack, and a forced fumble.
Parks was named the game's MVP after carrying the ball 21 times for 241 yards and two touchdowns. His performance was only outmatched by his belief that his team would win, which he felt drove them to victory.
"I think we just have such good chemistry and such good confidence. I was saying before the game that I'd put my house on this game," said the senior running back. "I just knew we were going to win. The whole team had that energy."
"He's the best player in Section V," said Lian. "He's been the best running back since he put on a uniform for us. He's the best running back in the history of our school and we've had some good ones."
"It just means so much," said Parks. "It's a memory that I'll never forget. I'm so thankful."
Brighton (11-0) will head to the Far West Regionals where they will take on Sweet Home from Section VI. The game will be played on Saturday, November 23rd at 6:00 p.m. at SUNY Brockport.
Canandigua's season ends with a 9-2 record.
Class B Championship: (3) Eastridge 28, (1) Batavia 14
Last season, the Eastridge football teams went winless. This year, they're sectional champions.
A Herculean effort by the Lancers finished their zero-to-hero journey with a convincing victory over previously unbeaten Batavia.
"We started this thing way back when I got the job in February," said first-year head coach Victor Davidson. "We just kept pushing. All off-season, we just preached, preached, preached that we could go out and compete with anybody. We felt like when we were playing our game and winning the line of scrimmage we can win games."
Eastridge tallied the first 22 points of the game.
Early in the second quarter, Christian Beason ran in a short touchdown and tallied the two-point conversion to give his team an 8-0 lead.
That score remained until midway through the third quarter. On fourth and two, Eastridge's Steven Masetta took a handoff and got the first down and a whole lot more. He sprinted 28 yards for the touchdown and a 15-0 lead.
The ensuing kickoff was a squib that took an unusual bounce, which the Lancers took advantage of as Myles Halmond recovered the ball to give Eastridge another turn on offense.
A few plays later, Benny Calixto connected with Dwayne Collins for a 25-yard touchdown and a 22-0 lead. It was the second big play for the QB-WR connection in as many weeks, though not nearly as impactful as the game-winning Hail Mary in the semifinals against HF-L.
However, all of those points did prove important as Batavia mounted a comeback. Quarterback Bronx Buchholz capped off an 86-yard drive with a short rushing touchdown to make it 22-6 with over ten minutes remaining. The Blue Devils recovered the ensuing onside kick and Justin Smith caught a 28-yard touchdown from Buchholz to make it a one-score game at 22-14.
Eastridge drove into Batavia territory with a chance to put the game away, but a Calixto pass was intercepted by Carter Mullen to give Batavia the ball back.
The potential game-tying drive was short-lived. On third down, Buchholz's pass was intercepted by Marion Bell and returned into the red zone. Two plays later, Beason tallied his second touchdown of the game to secure the win.
"I'm speechless," said Calixto, the team's senior quarterback. "It's a great feeling to do it with the guys that I've played with in the Junior Lancers. Growing up, we always won until last year when we went winless. It's just great to win it with them."
This is the first sectional title for Eastridge since 2013.
"It means a lot because we haven't won in ten years and then we went 0-8 last year," said Beason. "To bring us back to the top of Section V, it just feels great."
Eastridge (6-4) will take on Health Sciences in the Far West Regionals. The game will be played on Saturday, November 23rd at 3:00 p.m. at SUNY Brockport.
Batavia (9-1) was trying to get back on top of the Class B mountain after winning championships in 2021 and 2022.
Class C Championship: (1) East Rochester/Gananda 26, (3) Le Roy/Caledonia-Mumford 13
Three touchdowns from Ben Newman gave East Rochester/Gananda the edge over Le Roy/Cal-Mum in the Class C title, defeating the Rivals 26-13.
The Bombers got on the board first on a 1-yard carry from Cadearrell Sneed for a 6-0 lead in the first quarter. To close out the quarter, Newman kept it himself for a 10-yard rushing touchdown as East Rochester/Gananda took a 14-0 lead.
The second quarter scoring opened up with a touchdown pass from Newman to Sneed good for 19 yards to bring the score to 22-0.
Le Roy/Cal Mum responded with a quarterback sneak from Brady McClurg for its first score of the game, bringing the score to 20-6 with just over two minutes remaining in the quarter. The Bombers punched in one more score to go into the half as Newman found Noah Mather in the air. The 34-yard touchdown reception brought it to 26-6.
The Rivals held the Bombers scoreless in the second half, picking up a touchdown of their own. Late in the fourth, McClurg threw a 23-yard pass to Dillon Alcott in the end zone to close the gap to 26-13, but the Bombers held on to take the victory.
Newman led the Bombers' offense, completing 18 passes for 189 yards. He had three touchdowns, two passing and one rushing. Sneed put up two touchdowns with 204 total yards. Jordan Nunn had six receptions for 62 yards along with an interception.
On defense, Mather totaled nine tackles and one interception. Ray Allen recovered a fumble, and Samuel Carey and Nick Falso each had five tackles. Sneed added six tackles, two tackles for loss, and a sack.
East Rochester/Gananda (9-1) will face Salamanca in the first round of the state tournament on Saturday, November 23rd at SUNY Brockport. Kickoff is scheduled for noon. Le Roy/Cal-Mum ends its season at 5-5.
Class D Championship: (1) Avon 28, (2) Alexander 0
Avon held Alexander scoreless in the Class D title game to remain undefeated on the season, taking the 28-0 victory over the Trojans.
After a scoreless first quarter, a fumble recovered by Travis Hollada gave Avon the ball on the 19-yard line. Wesley Farsley punched in the score on the first play with a rushing touchdown to give the River Hawks an 8-0 lead.
With a minute to go in the half, Kalman Dolgos kept the ball for a 19-yard score on the ground to extend it to 15-0.
Avon opened the third quarter with a drive dominated by Farley who took it in the final two yards for a 22-0 lead.
