JD boys volleyball earns shot at third straight state title
Nov 16, 2024
For the third consecutive season the Jamesville-DeWitt boys volleyball team will conclude its season at Albany’s Capital Center, hoping that it all leads to a third consecutive state Division II championship.
Again undefeated, the Red Rams made it through both of its regional matches this week to run its remarkable win streak to 50 consecutive matches.
When the regional round began last Wednesday night at Guilderland High School, Section II champion Burnt Hills/Ballston Lake made J-D work hard from start to finish, but the Rams prevailed in four sets.
Each of the first two sets would see the Spartans stay close with J-D but not find itself able to match the Rams’ overall quality as it won the opener 25-21 and the second set 25-22.
A long third set followed. J-D nearly completed the sweep, but Burnt Hills, at 27-27, gained the serve back and then won the set 29-27 to prolong the match.
Having dropped sets in seven of its previous 19 matches this fall (including a five-set battle with Cicero-North Syracuse on Oct. 4), the Rams bounced back as it did every time before, taking the fourth set 25-19 to end it.
Busy on the back line, Carson Kaelin set a career mark with 59 assists, adding six digs. Avery Kielbasinski put away more than a set’s worth of points with his 26 kills, Owen Dougherty adding 18 kills.
Chine Okereke and Kian Sarmast had six kills apiece. Nevin Cosbey contributed five kills as Zach Hildreth led the defense with 10 digs, just ahead of Kielbasinski’s nine digs. Dougherty and Sarmast each got eight digs and Kaelin six digs.
Now it was on to the regional final Saturday against Section I’s Eastchester at Clarkstown High School. The Eagles were playing close to home, but that didn’t matter one bit.
J-D swept Eastchester, taking the first set 25-19 and getting control in both the second and third sets, too, claiming each of those sets by equal 25-17 margins.
Still in charge up front, Kielbasinski earned 13 kills and got three aces, with Ryan Keough putting away nine kills. Okereke and Cosbey each earned seven kills.
Dougherty got five kills and six digs, Sarmast four kills and Luke Schaefer three kills. Kaelin passed to all of them on his way to 36 assists, helped there by Zach Price and his nine assists.
As it did in 2022 and 2023, J-D will again need to beat two different opponents at the state Division II finals, going round robin with Eastport South Manor and Penfield starting at 10 a.m., with the championship match set for 3 p.m.
Meanwhile, Fayetteville-Manlius, fresh off upsetting Liverpool for its second sectional Division I title in the last three years, could not see it carry over into Wednesday’s regional round at Guilderland against Section II champion Shenendehowa.
The Hornets lost in four sets, recovering from a 25-22 loss in the opening set to win the second 25-18. As it turned out, the third set was pivotal, F-M close all the way but falling 25-23 as Shen closed it out 25-18 in the fourth.
Ben Resig had 17 kills, with Charlie Schroder adding 14 kills and Nathan Houck earning 10 kills. Patrick Horton passed to all of them with 41 assists as he joined Schroder and Matt Crisafulli getting 10 digs apiece. Resig had eight digs and Houck seven digs.
Finishing at 11-8, F-M will return a strong core of players in 2025 that includes Resig, Horton, Houck and Ethan Wong, though Schroder and Crisafulli graduate.
