FM cross country runners battle at state Class A championships
Nov 16, 2024
QUEENSBURY – Having Fayetteville-Manlius runners vie for New York State Public High School Athletic Association championships on a Saturday in November was as traditional as anything.
What wasn’t as traditional, though, was the fact that neither Hornets team was on hand. In fact, this meet at Queensbury High School was the first NYPSHSAA meet without F-M or Saratoga Springs in the team portion since 1993.
Still, F-M had high expectations. Izzie Sullivan had won an individual state title in 2021, and she was joined by Jordan Giannetti in the Class A girls race on a sectional All-Star team with Baldwinsville’s
Kamryn Barton and two runners from Auburn, Kyleen Brady and Mary Alice Pineau.
Sullivan would ultimately make her way to 25th place in exactly 18 minutes 29 seconds, while Giannetti was close behind, her 18:42.8 putting her in 31st place amid a field of more than 100 runners.
Together, Section III placed third among teams behind Section II and Section Section XI, the best individual finish coming from Brady in 10th place (17:58.4) as Liverpool’s Taylor Page was 15th in 18:03.7. Barton was 21st in 18:20.2, with Pineau (18:34.0) getting 27th place in between Sullivan and Giannetti.
As for the boys NYSPHSAA race, Will Ditre and Kevin Heller represented F-M, joined by Liverpool’s Josh Vang and two Nottingham runners, Henry Zhe-Heimerman and Coen Fierke.
Ditre would put up a time of 16:16.6, landing him in 52nd place, while Heller finished in 68th in 16:38.4. They trailed the 16:03.4 from Zhe-Heimerman as Vang, in 16:20.9, was one spot behind Ditre and Fierke (16:33.6) beat out Heller.
