Nov 16, 2024
Kino Lilly Jr. became the program leader for most three-pointers made as the Brown men’s basketball team fell to Holy Cross, 73-65 at the Pizzitola Sports Center on Saturday evening.
When asked about Lilly Jr. after the game, Head Men’s Basketball Coaching Chair Mike Martin ’04 said “I’m extremely grateful to be able to coach him, he allows me to coach him, he allows me to challenge him, and he allows me to demand a lot out of him.”
Lilly Jr. hit his 258th career three-pointer with 4:47 remaining in the second half, the triple gave Lilly Jr. the record for most three-pointers made in program history.
In a close first half, Holy Cross outscored Brown 33-30 as Lilly Jr. paced the Bears with 11 points on 4-6 shooting from the floor. AJ Lesburt Jr. and Lyndel Erold contributed five points each in the opening half.
The Bears outscored the Crusaders 12-8 in the paint in the first half and held Holy Cross without a fast break point. As a team, the Bears shot 12-28 from the floor in the opening 20 minutes.
Trailing 62-52 with 6:28 remaining in the second half, Brown launched a 7-0 run behind buckets from Landon Lewis, Aaron Cooley, and Lilly Jr. After the Crusaders took a 64-59 lead, Lilly Jr. nailed another three-pointer to cut the Holy Cross lead to 64-62 with 3:49 remaining in regulation. Two points was the closest the Bears would get as Holy Cross closed the game on a 9-2 run to earn the victory.
Lilly Jr. led all scorers with 24 points on 8-18 shooting from the floor, Landon Lewis matched a career-high with 15 points to go along with seven rebounds. Lewis also earned five blocks, which is the second consecutive game a Bear has rejected five shots.
“I’m really happy for him,” Martin ’04 added. “We’ve been playing basketball here for a long time and I know the three-point line hasn’t been there for all of the 119 years but to be the one who’s made the most three’s four games into your senior year says a lot about how special this young man is.”
Brown will wrap up the College HIll Classic on Sunday, Nov. 17 when they welcome Sacred Heart to the Pizzitola Sports Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. on ESPN+ and NESN.
