An armed man was shot and killed by San Diego County sheriff’s deputies who responded to a trespassing call early Friday evening in a residential area of Spring Valley. San Diego County sheriff’s deputies fired multiple times at the suspect after he pointed a gun at officers following a roughly two-hour incident at a home where children were present. The suspect — described as a 34-year-old man — was identified but will not be named at this time, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident began around 3 p.m. Friday when sheriff’s deputies were called to a Spring Valley home near Leland Street and Davenrich Street. According to San Diego police, the woman who called to report the trespasser said her ex-boyfriend entered the house through the back door and that he was armed with a gun and acting erratically. She told law enforcement that he was suffering mental issues and was under the influence. San Diego police have not yet identified whether the suspect had drugs or alcohol in his system, pending a toxicology report. The woman also reported there were four children in the house, police said. The children’s ages ranged from teenagers to as young as 6 years old, said San Diego police homicide Lt. Jud Campbell. When deputies arrived, they met the woman in front of the home and entered the house to safely extract the children while the suspect was in the backyard. Around 4:30 p.m., when deputies moved along the side of the house and attempted to contact the suspect, he fired at least two shots in the backyard. Deputies retreated to the street and the man went back into the house, police said. Detectives are still trying to piece together what the man did inside the house as police said evidence suggests he possibly fired his gun through the front door to the street and “that he came out several times and waved the gun around erratically.” Just before 5 p.m., police said, the suspect came out the front door, raised his semi-automatic handgun and pointed it in the direction of deputies. Seven sheriff’s deputies opened fire and struck the suspect multiple times, officials said. The officers administered medical aid but the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. No officers were injured during the incident. The deputies were wearing body cameras and law enforcement helicopters were circling overhead for most of the incident, officials said. San Diego police are investigating the death as well as the shooting by sheriff’s deputies under a countywide protocol designed to keep departments from investigating incidents involving their own officers.
