WASHINGTON (DC News Now) -- With 12 days to Thanksgiving, one local D.C. organization is preparing to host its annual Thanksgiving food distribution. For three decades, "Project GiveBack" has delivered Thanksgiving meals to over 5,000 families in the DMV. Ransom Miller III, the founder of Project Giveback joined DC News on Saturday morning to talk about the organization’s work and their event on November 23. “We in this region, try to support families that are in need or families that need a little help around Thanksgiving. It started as an effort; 6 baskets were distributed the first time and now in a week, a week from today we will distribute over 5000 food baskets to needy families in the D.C., Maryland and Virginia area,” said Ransom Miller III, the founder of Project Giveback. On This Day | 85 years since cornerstone ceremony for Jefferson Memorial Organization leaders said "Project GiveBack" began with a small group of friends dedicated to helping people in need before growing it into something bigger and ensuring families receive not just a meal, but enough food to sustain them for over a week. “There was no big vision earlier on, it was just something to do. And then the next year it felt so good, people wanted to do it again and again and again. And 30 years later, we’re not only doing work in Washington D.C., in the Washington D.C. area, we’re also branching out to Harlem New York, Indianapolis Indiana and Oklahoma City,” said Miller. "Project GiveBack" is teaming up with UPS to package and deliver food baskets directly to families and local distribution centers. Miller said UPS is their title sponsor and they didn’t only come with sponsorship but also logistics and trucks. They still need volunteers and people can register at projectgiveback.org “But we also need Money. This is a big faith exercise. We order the food with the understanding that the community is going to support. So you can donate at projectgiveback.org/donate. Once you come and see what we do, you’ll be convinced it’s a worthy effort and you will support it,” said Miller. "Project GiveBack" event is on November 23 at the D.C. Armory starting at 7:30 a.m.
