Algiers Ferry Terminal set to start major renovation

ALGIERS POINT, La. (WGNO) — After years of being closed, the Algiers Ferry Terminal is getting a facelift to improve transit access and transform the site into a community hub.
Riders had the chance to review plans and give feedback on what they'd like to see.
"For the community to be able to come back into this space and think about what it could look like and how it can better serve commuters, workers and visitors to Algiers. We're really excited to get a lot more functionality and use out of this ancillary," said Algiers Economic Development Foundation Executive Director Kelsey Foster.

The project received nearly $10 million in federal grants and a match from the state of Louisiana. It includes improvements to the terminal's interior and boarding ramp.
"To have a more accessible system with better stops and shelters. The ability to have some type of public services, some concessions, some public restrooms that, again, make people's trips easier and more accessible," said RTA Board Commissioner and Chair of the Operations and Administration Committee Fred Neal Jr.
Gina McDougall, a frequent rider, is anxious to see the project come to life after so many years, and more importantly, what the improvements will look like.
"I'm looking forward to having some of the covered elements the community space is getting ready for other events like that. That's nice. You look like potential farmers markets, things like that," said McDougall.
