John Carroll had to work its way through some early turnover issues and giving up points on the fast break in its home opener against visiting SUNY-Brockport on Nov. 16. The Blue Streaks switched to a zone defense, took the lead for good late in the first half, and improved to 3-0 with an 85-69 victory. John Carroll closed the first half on a 21-7 run and created some separation with a 15-0 run in the second half. Luke Chicone scored 18 points, Luke Frazier added 17, and Henry Raynor chipped in 12 to lead the way offensively. The Blue Streaks shot at a 46.7% clip (31 of 67), which helped alleviate their 21-14 turnover deficiency. John Carroll won the rebounding battle, 49-39, led by David Gentry’s eight boards and a trio of Blue Streaks with seven. “It was just a bunch of guys playing hard,” Frazier said. “We wanted to hold them under 70. We want to have a defensive mindset every game.” @JCUMensHoops senior Luke Frazier (17 points, 4 rebounds, 2 blocks) breaks down the Blue Streaks’ 85-69 win over SUNY-Brockport and 3-0 start to the season pic.twitter.com/m1CxzHMg6G — Jay Kron (@TownCenter2) November 16, 2024 John Carroll took an 11-7 lead in the early going when Chicone dove for a steal and flipped it to Chase Toppin, who delivered a behind-the-back pass to Henry Raynor for a dunk. PHOTOS: John Carroll vs. Brockport men’s basketball, Nov. 16, 2024 The lead changed hands seven times after that. Brockport’s biggest lead reached 28-23 with 10:42 left in the first half on a bucket by Alex Tavarez. But triples by Aiden Fitzgerald and Omar Abuhamdeh off the bench around a Brockport basket sliced John Carroll’s deficit to 30-29, but a mid-range jumper by Chicone with 5:46 to go until halftime gave the Blue Streaks a lead they would not relinquish. John Carroll connected on four 3s after that as part of the run that extended their lead to 47-37 at halftime. “We were a little sloppy with the ball to begin with,” John Carroll coach Pete Moran said. “(It’s not easy) when you play against a team you’re not accustomed to, we knew they were pretty quick and athletic. “You’ve got to make adjustments. We don’t play a lot of zone defense, but we ended up playing a lot (today) with a couple guys banged up. We stuck with our 2-3 zone to slow the pace a little bit.” @JCUMensHoops Coach Pete Moran discusses John Carroll’s 85-69 win over SUNY-Brockport pic.twitter.com/ylB8Or1Uwh — Jay Kron (@TownCenter2) November 16, 2024 Brockport got within six points on a couple of occasions in the second half, the last at 56-50 with 13:35 to play. But a pair of Gentry free throws kicked off a 15-0 run that was highlighted by seven points from Frazier-a layup, a baseline dunk and a 3-pointer. Frazier, who had just 3 points at halftime, then sank seven free throws as John Carroll extended its lead out to 78-56. “It’s just been a tough year, trying to get shots to fall,” said Frazier, who was battling the effects of a cold. “It felt good to see a couple go for me.” Chicone matched Brockport’s Zachary Rice for game-high scoring honors, and added seven rebounds and four assists. Frazier and Raynor each had a pair of blocks. Moran was pleased with the contributions off the bench of Fitzgerald, Abuhamdeh, and Sean Collins. “Aidan Fitzgerald and Sean Collins, I thought they did an excellent job,” Moran said. “Fitzgerald had a couple of steals. Frazier had a few minutes where he started playing at a higher level. He’s been dealing with some sickness, and to see him come out of his shell a little bit was a blessing.” Brockport fell to 1-3, including a 100-71 loss to Mount Union on Nov. 15. John Carroll will travel to Michigan next weekend to participate in the Great Lakes Invitational against Johns Hopkins and Emory University. “We know we have to get a little better,” Moran said. “There’s some things we have to figure out with rotations. I thought we did a much better job today than we did last weekend. Guys stepped up. When you’re able to go 8,9, or 10 players deep, that just makes us more special of a ballclub.”
