GRAND TERRACE – With a late field goal and last-minute defensive stand, the San Gorgonio Spartans found retribution against the Grant Terrace Titans after an earlier San Andreas League loss, coming away with a 26-23 victory and CIF Southern Section Division 11 semi-final berth.
Both defenses stood tall early with the Titans completing a fourth down goal line stand midway through the first quarter and the Spartans ending the first frame with a safety secured by senior Adrian Favela.
San Gorgonio (9-2, 2-1) snapped the early offensive woes with a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter, with senior quarterback Jacob Russell and junior running back Reshawn Holmes setting up and completing the scores.
Countering each Spartans score, Titans senior running back Exzavior Oliver found multiple big moments to keep Grand Terrace (5-7, 3-0) within striking distance.
Setting up the Titans first score with a 67-yard rush, Oliver became a one-man show through the remainder of the game, rushing for 317 yards and two touchdowns on 36 carries.
Setting up his own offense with an interception on the Spartans’ opening drive of the second half, he would later complete the effort with a 2-yard rushing touchdown.
“He is the best football player I’ve ever coached,” Grand Terrace head coach Ryan Taylor said. “Everything he’s done this year and what he did tonight, he earned.”
San Gorgonio retook the lead on its next possession. Oliver thencountered with a 68-yard rushing touchdown on the first play of the Titans next drive to tie the game 23-23 going into the final frame.
With both offenses stagnant in the fourth, San Gorgonio found life in the closing minutes with a go-ahead 29-yard field goal for junior Hector Bustamonte with 3:24 remaining.
Starting their final drive from their own 38-yard line, the Titans again turned to Oliver who charged 34 yards before finding a fourth and 3 with 33 seconds remaining. Rushing to his right, he found only Favela who made his fifth tackle for a loss and the game-winning stop for San Gorgonio.
“I’m not only proud of myself but proud of my (team),” Favela said. “We’ve come a long way and we’re not going to stop.”
“Tonight is kind of how our whole year went,” said Taylor. “We got down early, and the kids chose to fight. To lose a three-point game to a team like that – those guys should go on and win the whole dang thing, they’re that good. … For us to go out fighting like that to the last play – I couldn’t be prouder.”
The victory secures a CIF-SS Division 11 semifinal berth for San Gorgonio, and matchup against El Rancho.
Grand Terrace won the first matchup of the year, 29-21. San Gorgonio head coach Chris Chaddick was happy to get payback.
“It speaks to the testament and character of this team,” said Chaddick. “They felt like they got robbed from the (first game against Grand Terrace). I was telling our guys all week, ‘They can enjoy those league title shirts, and they can watch us in the front row of the semifinals. We got a win when it mattered.”
