MORENO VALLEY — Jordan McKinney might be the fastest player in his playoff bracket. McKinney ran for a game-high 249 yards and five scores as Carter upset third-seeded Canyon Spring 57-32 Friday night in a CIF Southern Section Division 12 quarterfinal round game. “In my head I know that no one can catch me,” said McKinney, who surpassed 1,000 rushing yards this season in the win. “No one has been able to hunt me down.” McKinney had touchdown runs of 6, 45, 90, 5 and 6 yards, respectively, for Carter (8-3 overall), which totaled 287 of its 331 rushing yards before halftime. “He’s had a breakout season,” Carter coach Felipe Salas said. “He’s a track star for a reason.” The sixth-seeded Lions advance to play the West Torrance-Oak Park winner in the semifinals next week. “We’ve been working a few years to finish our goals and be where we need to be,” Salas said. “We want to see the fruits of our labor.” Carter senior quarterback Ryder Carson, who completed 7 of 15 pass attempts for 197 yards and a touchdown, is thankful to have McKinney in the backfield this season. “It’s relieving to have him back there because I don’t have to do all the work,” Carson said. “I can totally rely on him to make plays.” Jordan Murray had two long touchdown runs in the first half but it wasn’t enough as Canyon Spring (9-3) had its best season in years come to an end. “We weren’t able to finish drives when it came down to it,” said Canyon Springs coach Kyle McFadden, whose team was stopped in the red zone four times in the first half. On just the second play of the game, Murray broke two tackles during a 55-yard touchdown run to put Canyon Springs on the scoreboard first. Usually sure-handed Cameron Holzendorf muffed a punt return and Carter took over at the Cougars’ 11-yard line before tying the score four plays later on a 5-yard run by Joey Martinez. A 41-yard run by McKinney set up a 6-yard touchdown run two plays later, and the 5-foot-9 senior gave Carter a 21-7 lead early in the second quarter with a 45-yard touchdown run. McKinney stamped Carter’s next drive with a 90-yard touchdown run. “Once I get a hole – bless my linemen and my receivers for blocking – they know what I’m going to do with the ball,” said McKinney, who is averaging more than 15 yards per carry this season.
