After last week’s election, President-elect Donald Trump visited the White House on Wednesday, meeting with President Joe Biden and promising a smooth transition of power. Throughout the week, Trump announced a litany of picks for his next administration. Some, such as Matt Gaetz, are already facing pushback from Republicans. All the while, many Americans are looking ahead to what a second Trump term may hold and how it will affect education, the economy and foreign policy.
At City Hall, aldermen unanimously voted down Mayor Brandon Johnson’s plan to hike property taxes by $300 million on Thursday, creating a glaring hole in the city’s 2025 budget. In Springfield, the General Assembly started its fall veto session this week, and Republicans called on the governor to limit new taxes to close the budget deficit. Plus, Chicago’s Board of Education had a special meeting to discuss the closing of several schools in the Acero charter school network.
