Preparations for Montgomery County’s Thanksgiving Parade kicks off
Nov 15, 2024
SILVER SPRING, Md. (DC News Now) -- Preparations are underway for the annual Montgomery County Thanksgiving Parade - the biggest Thanksgiving parade throughout the entire DMV.
The event will take place outside of Veterans Plaza on Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon.
“You’re going to see three different seasons. Sometimes it looks like we’re still in Halloween, but mostly you’ll see the Thanksgiving theme and then of course, we have Santa Clause coming at the end [as well as] some snowmen and some elves,” said Nahome Tekle with the Silver Spring Regional Service Office who helped plan the highly anticipated event.
The parade will start at Ellsworth Drive and Fentron Street, proceed South on Georgia Avenue, and conclude at Silver Spring Avenue.

The event is expected to draw thousands of people.
According to planners, the parade will feature dozens of floats and welcome local Olympians Thea Lafond and Aaron Owusu, who competed in the global competition this year.
“You’re going to see a broad range of folks that are going to be represented tomorrow,” said Tekle.
Attendees can also look forward to a festive lineup featuring the Maryland Youth Ballet and Akhmedova Ballet Acadamy.
“We’re doing the Skater Waltz,” explained Jessica Novakovich, an instructor at the Akhmedova Ballet Academy. “It’s kind of a little bit of a nod towards historical skaters, you know, on ice. [Dancers] have their capes, they have the little hand muffs, they have fur on their heads.”
Saturday’s performance is one that took hours of preparation and one the academy hopes serves as a way to diffuse culture and promote the performing arts throughout the DMV.
“I love the work in the studio. But when [dancers] are on the stage or on the street performing, that is very rewarding,” said Jacqueline Akhmedova, artistic director of the Akhmedova Ballet Academy.
