ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Thursday, President-elect Donald Trump announced that Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is his pick for Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
If confirmed by the Senate, he would work with state officials across the country on various health policies, including with New York State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald.
McDonald, who visited Rochester Friday, expressed a willingness to collaborate and protect the health and safety of New Yorkers.

“Just to be really clear, the mission of the New York Department of Health is to protect and promote the health and wellbeing for all built on the foundation of health equity," McDonald said. "That's our mission. That doesn't change with any election."
RFK Jr. is known for his controversial anti-vaccination stance.
"When it comes to vaccines, states regulate vaccines," McDonald said. "Why should you get a measles, mumps or rubella vaccine? Because if your kid gets measles, they might end up in the hospital, and that’s a very sad thing.”
Should he officially be named to the position, RFK Jr. has also promised to remove fluoride from America's drinking water. When asked about what this means for New York State, McDonald said the use of fluoride is tightly regulated by the state and local communities. He also emphasized that it has numerous benefits for oral health, acknowledging a lack of dentists across the state.
"Fluoride should be given at the appropriate dose," he said. "Why fluoride is good for your water is - you're less likely to get cavities, then you're less likely to go to the dentist emergently, you're less likely to have pain."
The Senate has yet to undergo the confirmation process for RFK Jr.
