FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) — Six dogs have been seized by the City of Fresno Animal Center after killing and chasing cats.
The pack of dogs was captured on Thursday morning near the Riverside Golf course.
Alma Torres, Deputy City Manager and Interim Director for the Fresno Animal Center confirmed all six dogs belonged to someone.
"These animals were owned. They were not strays. For our community, you know, just to make sure that they are safely securing their backyards so that their animals are not running around," Torres said.
She said the dogs have the same owner.
"Our very first intent is to provide them with the education and the resources that they need to be responsible pet owners. When that fails, then we will proceed with some of our ordinance allowances," Torres said.
She said she is thankful for the community's help.
"The several reports helped us sort of figure out what direction they were coming from so that we can identify where to locate them," Torres said.
Erica Johnson lives in the area where the dogs were found.
"It was it was pretty scary. And we noticed a lot of people just stopped going out. People stopped walking their dogs. They stopped going for walks," Johnson said.
She said neighbors have been terrorized by these dogs since October.
"We noticed cats were getting killed, unfortunately. One in my cul-de-sac just a few weeks ago and a dozen others all around here," Johnson said.
Johnson says it was a community effort to restore safety.
"This whole area was able to band together, report the incidents, speak to the city," Johnson said
She said she felt relief knowing the dogs were off the streets.
"I think we all just feel like we can go outside again, and we don't have to look over our shoulder and especially at night, even just to go for a walk, a late walk to get your mail late," Johnson said.
The animal center says the fate of the dogs remains undecided.
The city has not said how the dogs got loose to begin with.
