LIVINGSTON, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - Final election results aren't in for a few more weeks, but the City of Livingston is hopeful that their sales tax will pass. The future of Livingston's Fire Station is in jeopardy if this measure does not pass. Earlier this year, Merced County Supervisors voted to shut down the Livingston Fire Station 96 to help manage funds. If this happens, city residents would have to rely solely on the county fire department, which Livingston Mayor Pro-Tem Gurpal Samra said would result in a 15-minute response time. "Somebody has a heart attack, why bother calling 911? You might as well call the morgue, they'll get there faster," said Samra.  Although the shutdown hasn’t occurred yet, the Livingston City Council proposed Measure L, a 1% sales tax that could generate $2.8 million for police and fire services. If the sales tax passes, which as of Friday looks promising, the funds would enable the city to hire up to four additional firefighters, as required by Cal Fire.  "The priority is to keep our word to our residents that Livingston Park Station will stay open and we will man it, and then whatever's left over, we will move over to the police department," said Samra.  And like all other election boards in California, Merced County is working tirelessly to get all ballots counted. "We have counted about 85% of the total ballots that have been cast," said Mel Levey with the Merced County Registrar of Voters.  Levey reported that over 100 ballots were missing signatures, and the signatures on about 300 other ballots did not match those on file with the county.  Those voters have been contacted and have till Dec. 1 to respond. "So even in a county or a district where races have been called, it doesn't necessarily mean that those counties are done counting them," added Levey.  The next round of election results in Merced County will be updated on Nov. 19 by 5 p.m. and the final election results in California will be posted on Dec. 3.
