FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - A fire station, a cemetery, and two roads in Fresno County could all be getting new names after California approved a state-wide renaming described as a "monumental step towards addressing historic injustices." The locations all use the term "squaw" in their name. The California Advisory Committee on Geographic Names (CACGN) has approved renaming over 30 locations that all use that term, spread across 15 counties. Fresno Co. asks for resident input on ‘Squaw Valley’, AB 2022 The announcement on Friday from the California National Resources Agency revealed that four of the 30 California locations listed are in Fresno County. The locations in Fresno County are: Cal Fire Squaw Valley Station (Squaw Valley Fire Department, 32515 E Kings Canyon Road) Squaw Valley Cemetery (31776 Ruth Hill Road) Squaw Valley Road Squaw Leap Lane Legislation requires that the new names "prioritize honoring tribal cultures and Indigenous languages, ensuring that these places reflect the state's rich cultural history moving forward," state officials say. In a statement, Fresno County says it communicated in May 2024 with local tribes and the residents of both Auberry and Squaw Valley, as well as conducting two community meetings at the Bear Mountain Library, to get input from the residents on the renaming of these geographic features and places. All of the suggested names and feedback were submitted, along with the links to the filmed community meetings and required documents, to the California Advisory Committee on Geographic Names (CACGN).  The County hopes the CACGN will seriously consider the feedback and name suggestions from the local residents before making the final selections. Fresno County According to the State of California, the geographic features and place names should be renamed by Jan. 1, 2025.
