ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Once again, UNM head coach Richard Pitino and his Lobo basketball team will play against hall of fame coach Rick Pitino. This time, its in Madison Square Garden against a rising St. John's team. Both the Lobos and Red Storm enter the game 3-0. St. Johns is currently ranked No. 22 in the country, which is the spot previously held by UCLA prior to losing to UNM. This will be the fourth meeting between Richard and Rick. Richard one the previous matchup in 2022 82-74 which Rick was coaching at Iona. For the Lobos, a trip to the east coach is foreign territory. A group of Lobo fans who made the trip is hoping to make MSG feel like home. "You know, if we lose my team will be disappointed, but I will be very happy for my son," said Rick. "You know, I'm his biggest fan. I should probably say his mom is his biggest fan, but I hope St. John's wins, but if we don't I will be a proud father." UNM and St. Johns tip off on Sunday at 10 a.m. MT. The game will be broadcast on FS1.
