INDEPENDENCE, Mo. -- Oval Spring apartment residents in Independence showed their support for the family of a two-month-old girl who was killed last week along with her mother.
Independence police say it happened during an officer-involved shooting and the mother was holding a knife. Beyond that they aren't saying who was shot or exactly what happened as an outside investigation continues.
About 100 people walked from the front of the complex to the building up the hill where witnesses say an officer rushed an infant to a squad car, after an officer-involved shooting.
They made signs and lit candles before gathering in prayer.

"It's just something that shouldn't happen and its just tragic," community member Starla Pappas said.
They offered prayers for Destinii Hope, a baby who was just 11 weeks old when she was killed.
"I just want to let you all know how sorry I am and how deeply saddened that we all are and I want to be a pillar of support for everyone of you," Oval Spring apartment manager Carrie Lufkin told the crowd.
Members of KC LEAP, which stands for Law Enforcement Accountability Project, are among those who want to know how the pair died and why. Independence Police say they were called to a domestic assault. 34 year old Maria Pike had a knife, an officer shot and at some point both Pike and baby Destinii Hope died.
"It's kind of mind boggling that a police officer would think their life was in danger from someone who was physically holding a young baby in their arms," Steve Young, KC Leap co-founder, said.
Family say the parents struggle with mental health issues and have separately had previous children removed from their care. Tonight Destinii's aunt said the new mother might have dealing with something else.

"We want to know the reason why that officer shot a woman who had post partum depression holding a baby in her arms?"
As they walked to the scene where detectives and the Jackson County Prosecutor's Office began their investigation a week ago, Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker was among those in the crowd who watched the family's pleas as they shouted "justice for Destinii" before they released balloons, and they say the spirits of a troubled mother and baby to the heavens.

The prosecutor declined comment Friday night. Her office has previously said it would wait to review all the evidence including body camera video after the case is submitted to them. That team of detectives from neighboring agencies says it's hopes to complete its investigation sometime next week.
