A Red Flag Warning was in place at the time. Emergency proclamation issued in Hawaii ahead of Red Flag Warning HPD was asked to evacuate the Maili Pillbox trailhead as the fast-moving brush fire spread across the mountain fueled by high winds and dry brush. HFD said no structures or homes were threatened by the fire. "There is an unhoused individual who consistently has plagued this area," explained Rep. Darius Kila (Honokai Hale, Nanakuli, Maili). "Several eyewitnesses are confirming it was him, and it's dangerous because this is a red flag warning day, it's very windy, and it moved quickly up the mountain." He said if it reached the peak, fire crews would not have been able to access the fire. "This may be the first time someone is being charged with increased arson charges since we passed a bill in the legislature earlier this year on red flag warning days that your penalties are doubled for any fire-starting activities," he explained. HFD said during red flag warnings, they add a driver to all brush trucks, as well as an additional firefighter to all tankers. They also add additional tankers to the frontline. Hawaiian Electric had spotters on the scene monitoring the situation. HECO said spotters will relay information back to HECO on whether it's necessary for the power to be shut off in high-risk fire areas during dangerous fire weather. "It's the combination of high winds, and low relative humidity that create the potential conditions where you could have the risk of wildfires," explained Darren Pai, HECO spokesperson. "We monitor those closely, and we use data from the National Weather Service and the weather stations we've deployed across our poles and infrastructure to really get information from those areas," he continued. He said there were spotters on all the islands. Check out more news from around Hawaii HECO has not had to utilize the PSPS program since it went into effect in the summer of 2024.
