MILILANI, Hawaii (KHON2) -- While the proposed affordable housing project in Mililani is supposed to help attract and retain public school teachers, it's already receiving some push-back. Get Hawaii's latest morning news delivered to your inbox, sign up for News 2 You A 109-unit affordable workforce housing project for public school teachers and staff is proposed right on Mililani High School's property, at the corner of Meheula Parkway and Hookelewaa Street. According to residents, the problem is that it's not the site that was talked about. Hawaii Schools Superintendent could receive pay raise, contract extension "Everybody in the community was under the impression this vital project was going to be built at the preferred site which is located closer to the Mililani High School stadium," said Sabrina Gustafson, Milillani resident. Cheri Nakamura is with the Hawaii School Facilities Authority, the agency in charge for the project. She said the developer, Pacific Housing Assistance Corporation, chose this site because it "made the most sense." The building would be on school property, but away from classrooms and access to infrastructure is easiest at this corner of campus. "All of these things were part of their rationale, and we understand why they felt it was appropriate for their proposal," said Nakamura. Another issue - the site is currently home to the school's agriculture program. "The students have worked really hard on it and they're being promised some sort of agriculture program in the future," said Gustafson. "We don't know what that's gonna be." Nakamura said Pacific Housing promises to move the program to another part of campus and make it "better." Additionally, there's traffic. The intersection leads to Mililani Town Center and during the school day, students cars line the street. "Are they gonna park on this busy street?" asked Gustafson. "Are they gonna impact the safe travel of our students to and from the campuses? We don't know." There are two more public meetings if you want more information or want to voice your opinion. Both are at the Mililani High School library. One is Saturday at 1 p.m. The second, Monday night at 6:30 p.m. "We're going to gather all of this input, because at the end of the day, we want to build a project that the community is going to be happy with, and hopefully support so that we can see the eye on the prize and be able to provide housing for teachers," said Nakamura. Nakamura said the project is far from finalized and the School Facilities Authority may add more community meetings.
