Hometown Heroes: Kimberly celebration honors Veterans and their spouses

KIMBERLY, WI (WFRV) - Veterans stood at attention for the Armed Forces Salute as Appleton West High School students sang the marching song of each military branch for the annual Veterans Day celebration at Hallmark Place Retirement Community in Kimberly.
"A lot of the community donated gift certificates, cards, prizes, and other things," shared the property manager, Tracey Evers. "It's been an amazing event!"

They've been doing this for several years and decided to include spouses more in the gathering this year.
Eyla Mae Zwiers is married to the longest-serving Veteran in the crowd today. Army Veteran Roger Zwiers served 21 years between active service and reserves.
"I'm just glad they're backing the men who left their families," said Eyla Mae. "I don't want to start crying but the hardest part was when he left."
"I appreciate it when they say thank you for your service," Roger added.

World War II Veteran and one-time US Navy torpedo man Art Behling received the prize for being the oldest in attendance at 101.
"I ended up in the South Pacific on a destroyer," he recalled. "I made six invasions. I was a really lucky person. I should have been killed four times."
