El Dorado's dream season ends in bidistrict round with loss to Amarillo
Nov 15, 2024
EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) -- The El Dorado High School football team's dream season came to an abrupt end in the first round of the bi-district round of the state 5A playoffs on Friday night, Nov. 15.
The Aztecs got punched in the mouth in the opening moments Friday night at the SAC II and lost to visiting Amarillo 45-14.
El Dorado finished with a 10-1 overall record and District 1-5A championship. This was a marked turnaround for the Aztecs who went 1-9 in 2023.
"Obviously, it wasn't the outcome we wanted in this game, but it was just a tremendous effort (this year), from not just our kids, but our seniors," El Dorado head coach Frank Martinez said. "Our seniors are the first gorup we have had as a coaching staff that has gone through all four years and the culture they have built is lasting."
Amarillo, 6-4 overall, jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter and led 21-0 at the half. El Dorado twice moved deep into Amarillo territory, only to turn the ball over on downs in the first half.
"We are going to remember this game and understand we want to be one of the best in the state. That is our goal," Martinez said. "We are one of the best in the city and we know that but we have our work cut out for us this off-season. But we look forward to moving forward."
Amarillo quarterback Jett Lopez threw two toucdown passes in the first half -- one for 40 yards to Oliver Parsons and a 76-yarder to Jude Dunivan. Dunivan also added a 55-yard scoring run in the first half.
"We knew they have a potent offense with a lot of weapons," Martinez said of Amarillo "They showed that tonight. We had our chances and we didn’t finish. We shot ourselves in the foot at times. We just couldn’t (finish), especially in the first half. We started sustaining drives in the second half but it was just a little too late."
Amarillo's Lopez added a 1-yard run in the second half and a third touchdown pass --- this time a 39-yarder to Parsons. Sam Webb added a 38-yard field goal and Bryson Brown added a 6-yard TD run to round out the scoring for Amarillo.
El Dorado got a 10-yard touchdown run from Ryan Estrada and backup quarterback Brycen Booth hit Adrian Olivas for a 6-yard touchdown pass in the second half.
El Dorado's starting quarterback Elijah Issa was sacked in the first quarter and left with an apparent lower-leg injury and did not return.
El Dorado has not won a state playoff game since 2012 and has gone 0-8 in the playoffs in that time.
